University of North Texas Wins EsportsUn’I Tournament, Earns Bid to 2025 CECC May Madness

Stamford, CT – February 17, 2025In the second year of the EsportsUn’I tournament featuring the game Valorant, the University of North Texas defended their title and earned a bid to play in the Collegiate Esports Commissioner’s Cup (CECC) May Madness.

CECC May Madness, established in 2022, gives 84 teams in 4 different game titles (Overwatch 2, Rocket League, Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) and 12 players in Street Fighter 6, a chance to face other schools from across North America and one team or player in each game are crowned as national champions.

The CECC EsportsUn’I Qualifier Valorant tournament was a two-day event and featured teams of women and non-binary individuals, with the winning team earning an automatic spot to play in CECC May Madness. Eight schools from Purdue University, the University of Toronto, the University of North Texas, University of California, San Diego, Fisher College, the University of Idaho, San Jose State University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte all had one team participate in the event.

The top four featured each of the top four seeded teams moving into the single elimination playoffs, which were 1st-seeded North Texas, 2nd-seeded Fisher, 3rd-seeded San Jose State, and 4th-seeded University of Toronto.

The championship match would feature Fisher College and the defending EsportsUn’I champions in the University of North Texas. In the best of 3 series, Fisher College would start by winning the first map, Haven, by a score of 13-7. Despite the start, North Texas would then go on to win 13-11 on the second map, Split, and ultimately defended their EsportsUnI title with a 13-9 score on the final map of Fracture.

With the victory, the University of North Texas’ Valorant team earned their bid to CECC May Madness 2025, set to take place May 2-4 at Esports Stadium Arlington in Texas, renowned as the largest in-person scholastic esports event in North America. The 2024 event attracted over 4 million views and 4,100 attendees, and the upcoming 2025 event marks the fifth year of CECC's celebration of collegiate esports excellence.
