Feb 21, 2020

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Stony Brook University boasts a diverse campus, including nearly 2,500 international students from China.

Now, that group — and Mandarin speakers throughout the world — can watch select Stony Brook Athletics games in their native language.

Stony Brook Athletics will stream its upcoming basketball games in Mandarin via AmericaEast.TV.

The Mandarin-language basketball game streams will debut Saturday with play-by-play announcer Ky Wang on the call as the Stony Brook men tip off against Maine at 7 p.m. at Island Federal Arena.

"The role of intercollegiate athletics at Stony Brook is to extend the University brand on a regional, national and global level, and producing our games in Mandarin is one way to do that," Stony Brook director of intercollegiate athletics Shawn Heilbron said. "Stony Brook is such a diverse institution, so we're constantly looking for ways to connect with a broader audience. Our belief is that basketball is an international game that serves as a common thread whether you speak English or Mandarin."

Wang, who hails from Zhejiang province in China, currently is in New York pursuing a master's degree in sports management.

A former professional swimmer, Wang captained and also served as an assistant basketball coach with an international school in Shanghai.

"I'm excited. The people will definitely love it," Wang said. "People in China like basketball. They cannot get enough of it."

Stony Brook Athletics is partnering with Kiswe Mobile to make the experience possible for our Mandarin-speaking audience.
